BMW has introduced the latest version of the M2 CS, a special edition model designed to offer enhanced driving dynamics suitable for both track enthusiasts and everyday drivers. Following the footsteps of the BMW M2 Racing, the M2 CS is built on the chassis of the second-generation M2 and will be manufactured at the BMW Group Plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The production run will be limited, with primary markets including the USA, Germany, and China. The M2 CS is expected to hit showrooms by late summer 2025, with a starting price of €115,000 in Germany.
At its core, the BMW M2 CS builds upon the second-generation M2, already noted for its performance and handling characteristics. The new model introduces an upgraded version of the 3.0-litre six-cylinder inline engine featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology. This engine delivers 390 kW (530 hp), which is 50 horsepower more than the current M2 model, bringing it closer in performance to BMW’s larger M models such as the M3 Competition Sedan and M4 Competition Coupé equipped with M xDrive.
Power from this turbocharged engine is sent exclusively to the rear wheels through an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, a feature standard on the M2 CS. The transmission offers three shift modes, allowing drivers to customize their driving experience from smooth shifts to aggressive gear changes tailored for the track. The engine also features optimized throttle mapping for sharper and more immediate responses across various driving modes.
The M2 CS incorporates a host of chassis and brake upgrades intended to support the increased power and enhance overall driving dynamics. The chassis has been lowered by eight millimeters and comes with bespoke tuning of springs, dampers, and chassis control systems. These refinements aim to improve handling and stability, especially under demanding driving conditions. The car also features Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with optimized settings for track performance and an adaptive M chassis with a model-specific setup.
Braking is handled by a standard M Compound system with red brake calipers, designed to provide strong and consistent stopping power. As an option, buyers can choose the M Carbon ceramic brake system, which offers reduced weight and increased resistance to fade during high-performance use. The standard wheel setup includes forged M light-alloy wheels with a double-spoke design finished in matt Gold Bronze. These wheels measure 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear, fitted with track tires as standard, with alternative tire options available.
The exterior design emphasizes lightweight materials and a sporty appearance, incorporating several carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) elements. Notable features include the M Carbon roof, exposed carbon-fiber rear diffuser, a lightweight boot lid with an integrated ducktail spoiler, and black M kidney grilles with optimized air inlets. Four paint finishes are offered: Sapphire Black metallic, BMW Individual Velvet Blue metallic, M Brooklyn Grey metallic, and M Portimao Blue metallic. The car also comes equipped with Adaptive LED headlights and M lights Shadowline with dark inlays.
Inside, the M2 CS continues the blend of performance and exclusivity with M Carbon bucket seats trimmed in Merino leather and Alcantara, featuring an illuminated “CS” logo. The interior carbon-fiber trim extends to the center console, while the standard M Alcantara steering wheel offers authentic racing touches such as a red center marker and M buttons for quick access to configurable driving settings. Additional touches like the M seatbelts, illuminated door sill plates, and ambient lighting complete the sporty cabin environment.
Technology-wise, the M2 CS is equipped with the latest BMW Operating System 8.5, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch central control display. Drivers can access climate controls, navigation, and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The M-specific digital displays and Head-Up Display contribute to the driver-focused environment, while voice commands and touch controls allow intuitive operation.
In terms of performance figures, the BMW M2 CS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds, shaving 0.2 seconds off the standard M2. It continues its sprint to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 11.7 seconds, an improvement of 1.2 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 302 km/h (188 mph). These figures are supported by an engine designed for high revs, featuring a maximum engine speed of 7,200 rpm and a torque peak of 650 Nm available across a broad rev range.
Safety and driver assistance features include standard semi-autonomous systems such as front collision warning, cruise control with braking functions, lane departure warning, and parking assistance. Optional systems extend to active cruise control with stop-and-go functionality and a comprehensive driving assistant package.
Overall, the BMW M2 CS represents a balanced package aimed at drivers seeking a compact high-performance car that offers track-capable dynamics alongside everyday usability. While production will be limited and availability focused on select markets, it is positioned to appeal to those who prioritize both driving enjoyment and the practicality of a daily driver.
